I mailed a check for the world’s latest victims
And money’s no longer enough
To quell the call, insistent and growing
Our money’s no longer enough
Chorus:
For all those little ones with dirty bare feet
Whose ancient eyes peer through shell-shocked worn faces
Whose voices no longer have strength to ask why
What can you do, they say
It’s always been this way
Some gotta be rich while others are poor
Some gotta be safe while others’r at war
We live in our providence
Adrift from true guidance
Buying or giving to cover what’s missing
What do we stand for if not human life?
Believe in a world our babies all cry for
Promise: Enough is enough
Let’s BE the change we all wish to see
And I know we can be enough
For all those little ones with dirty bare feet
Whose ancient eyes peer through anguished small faces
Whose voices no longer have strength to ask why
How much is enough?
Song Origins:
Are the disasters and tragedies in the world worse than ever, or am I simply awake to them now? This is a call to action song that can sometimes be hard for us to hear in our relative prosperity and good fortune. It came about through my frustration and powerlessness in watching the suffering of so many children around the world and the desire to DO SOMETHING instead of simply sending money. I am only beginning to understand its meaning – for me and for my life. Author Christina Baldwin writes, “Story is the mother of us all for we become who we say we are.” I hope to live into the story of this song.
Jen’s Favorite Line:
Buying or giving to cover what’s missing. What do we stand for if not human life?
Question to Contemplate:
In what ways am I contributing my whole self without any expectation of return?
